Valentine's Day can be an emotional time if you happen to be a single parent.

It may be a day when children begin to ask questions which you might find upsetting and it may throw up issues which you may not be ready to to deal with.

But Valentine's Day doesn't have to be an emotional minefield just because you may not have a significant other right now!

Valentine's Day is all about love and appreciation so remember that and have a creative, fun-filled day with kids and friends.

1. Get celebrating!

Use Valentine's Day as a way to tell your children what you love most about them and who knows, you may just hear some very sweet sentiments in return.

2. Get creative!

Children are used to taking part in creative activities at school, but how often do they see mum elbow-deep in glitter and coloured paper? Get artsy and make each other special cards together.

3. Get cooking!

Why not draw up a special Valentine's Day menu with your children? Get all hands on deck, hit the kitchen and prepare one of your favourite meals together. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, the point is you make it and enjoy it together as a team.

4. Get chatting!

Your children may be reaching an age where they're starting to take an interest in the opposite sex, so why not use February 14th as a way to open up and bond with your child? It may not go to plan, so don't push it, but do give it a whirl!

5. Get calling!

Why not use Valentine's Day as an occasion to phone some friends and catch up? Love is love, so let those pals of yours know you're thinking of them.
