What are the prenatal tests during the third trimester?

As you are nearing the end of your pregnancy, there is the possibility of several tests to ensure your baby is growing healthy and is prepared to be born. Some of these tests will be familiar since you underwent them in the first two trimesters. Others will be completely new experiences.

You will continue to do urine tests only now your appointments will come more frequently the closer you get to delivery. These urine tests look for glucose and protein in order to eliminate the possibility of gestational diabetes or preeclampsia. Even though you underwent an ultrasound at 20 weeks, your doctor may suggest additional ultrasounds to check up on your baby.

If you are a high risk pregnancy, you will most likely have the amniocentesis test around week 15 or 20, but is also possible after week 32 if there is a question about your baby’s lung function. The glucose test for gestational diabetes is standard for every pregnancy and occurs between weeks 24 and 28.

After week 36, there is a Group B Strep test given to all pregnant mothers as a precaution against bacteria that could be transferred to your baby during delivery. If your baby’s activity suddenly drops, one or more nonstress tests will be done.
