Nail biting can be the result of boredom, nervousness or stress (or a combination of all three) and can be an extremely tough habit to break. Not only can it cause damage, but nail biting can be very off-putting to those around you. Here are a few easy things that can help discourage you from biting:
- Try painting your nails a bright colour to deter you from biting them. If that does not work then maybe spend money on getting your nails professionally manicured to prevent you from attacking your hands. Shellac (or similar two week polishes) may be a good solution to your problem.
- Make sure that your diet contains enough calcium and magnesium rich foods. These minerals will help strengthen the nail and aid in healthy growth.
- There are many products on the market that claim to discourage nail biting. You simply paint the solution on to the nail like a nail varnish. It works by coating the nail, leaving a repulsive taste, which should eventually discourage you from biting on your own free will.
- If your nail biting is constant, try to do something else with your hands to distract them. You may choose to squeeze a stress ball, twiddle your thumbs or sit on your hands.
