Vitamin A
Vitamin A is known to promote healthy nail growth. However, it is important to know that these vitamins can be flushed out of the body through alcohol or caffeine consumption.
Vitamin B
If you notice that your nails are thin and constantly breaking, you may have a deficiency in vitamin B. Lack of folic acid (a B vitamin) can also lead to unhealthy nail growth.
Vitamin C
One of the main causes of hang nails is a vitamin C deficiency. Vitamin C can be found in a number of common foods including blackcurrants, red peppers, kiwi fruit, lemons and oranges. Many dietary supplements also contain doses of vitamin C.
Zinc
A zinc deficiency can cause a number of abnormalities to nail shape and colour. This may be most noticeable by white spots on the nail. Bananas are commonly suggested as a great source of zinc; however, meats, seafood, cereals and nuts contain much higher quantities.
