In fact, many of us look to our own childhood and relationship with our own mums to make sense of what is to come.
And that is exactly what happened when one mum-to-be told her own mother that she was expecting a little girl - and the soon-to-be grandmother's reaction is beautiful.
In a post on Reddit, YogiMamaK explains how herself and her husband found out they were having a little girl recently.
And when they told her mum, they were overwhelmed by her response to the news.
"Yesterday my husband and I found out we are having a baby girl!" she wrote.
"I told my mom, and she said that she hopes my daughter is just like me, so that I can have the kind of relationship with my daughter that my mom and I have!

Continuing, she adds: "My mom is my bestie, but she's not a big compliment giver, so this felt enormously special. I sappy cry all over again every time I think about it!"
