Social media has become an integral part of our daily lives, to the point where our older children don’t know an existence without it.
While daily selfies may be the norm for them, it’s important that they know the potential dangers of oversharing online – and Australian authorities are at pains this week to emphasise this.
A post on the official Australian Federal Police Facebook page shows two side-by-side photos of a young boy, with the caption explaining how the slightest differences can increase our children’s vulnerability online.
In the eye-opening post, the authorities explain exactly ‘what’s in a selfie’ and how seemingly insignificant details can expose our little ones to danger.
“The photo on the left tells us who the boy is, roughly how old he is, where he goes to school, and possibly even where he lives,” the caption reads.
They go on to urge members of the public to ‘please be wary of what you, and your kids, are posting online’.
The post has gone totally viral since being posted online, with others sharing their own advice in the comment section.
“Ensuring ‘location settings’ are set to ‘never’ for your camera, also. Otherwise it is very easy to work out where the photo was taken!” wrote one follower.
