For most children, age three is when it’s appropriate to take them to their first movie in a cinema. That depends on the child however. If your child is able to sit through a video or DVD, then it may be time to try taking them to their first movie. Be warned however that while movies can be exciting and fun, some children find the size and noise overwhelming, and may not be ready for movies before five or even six years old.
You can help to make the movie experience more fun the first time around by taking your child to see a movie that where they are familiar with the characters. Choose a daytime show, when your child is rested and alert, and be sure to buy popcorn and snacks. You may want to decant cool drinks into a sippy cup though – to avoid spills!
You should be aware that many children need frequent bathroom breaks during a film, and getting a seat close to the aisle is a good idea! Lastly, if your child is fidgety or agitated, don’t try to force them to sit still. Rather, leave and try again another time.
