A woman who found herself trapped in her car during the infamous New York blizzard has spoken of her heartbreak as she wrote goodbye letters to each of her daughters.

Karen Rossi was driving home in the heavy snow in Buffalo when a plough passed her car, effectively burying it in snow.

Describing the terrifying ordeal, Karen said that she feared for the worst.

“I felt like I was underground, buried in a casket,” she told Yahoo Parenting, adding: “It was surreal. It was just silent for hours. Nobody came. And my phone had died.”

Karen did manage to get her phone working long enough to make contact with her 17-year-old daughter, who told her mum to keep the tailpipe of the car clear of snow so as to avoid the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Going on her daughter’s advice, Karen managed to crawl out and clear the snow away from the tail pipe, venturing out every 90 minutes in the dangerous conditions to repeat the process.

However, trapped in her car for 13 hours, with no sign of a rescue, Karen admits that she didn’t know if she would make it out alive.

So, she made the heartbreaking decision to write goodbye letters to each of her daughters, having previously texted them to say she loved them.

“You never think this is the way you’re going to pass away. I started to think about my life and my family and my daughters,” she recalls.

Thankfully, Karen was rescued soon after, and has said that neither she nor her daughters are going to read the letters.
