Social media challenges are without doubt one of the most dangerous by-products to come from the tech movement, and unfortunately, it seems we have yet another craze to grapple with.

The latest ‘trend’ taking social media by storm is the #BananaPeelChallenge, whereby participants – mainly teens, by the look of it – are experimenting with banana peels to see if they really are as slippery as reputed.

This craze apparently all started with US teen Jason Oakes, who is seen sliding over the banana peel on the floor of his kitchen, in a video uploaded to Twitter. While he is initially disappointed that the peel doesn’t seem as slippery as it’s portrayed in cartoons, he gets a rude awakening when he goes FLYING and appears to land on his back.

Despite how sore Jason’s experience looked to be, other teens promptly began carrying out the challenge themselves, and the results are equally as cringe-worthy.

While these young people seem to look on the ‘challenge’ as a bit of fun, there is a very real possibility of getting seriously hurt – and, let’s face it, that is the last thing we want for our children.

So, if you think there’s even the slightest possibility that your teen might participate, be sure to warn them of the potentially serious consequences.
