It is actually fairly common for expectant mothers to experience a nosebleed during pregnancy. The reason for this is because you not only have an increased blood supply but your blood vessels are also dilated.

But while you are certainly not the first person to have one when you are pregnant, it can still be quite startling when you get your first bleed, especially if it is particularly heavy.

To stop the bleeding, try the following steps:

  1. Sit down or if you are lying down sit up, pinch your nose just above your nostrils and hold for about ten to 15 minutes. You don’t need to hold it really tight so that you are in pain, but you will need to hold it for the entire ten minutes to give it a chance to clot.
  1. While pinching your nose, breathe through your mouth and lean slightly forward. Keep your mouth open to stop the blood going down your throat.
  1. An ice pack just on the bridge of your nose while pinching your nostrils will constrict your blood vessels and help to stem the bleeding.
  1. If it still hasn’t ceased after ten minutes do again for another ten. If it is still bleeding you will need to call your doctor.

How to avoid a bleed:

There are a number of things you can stop to stop you getting a nosebleed in the first place:

  1. Blow your nose gently.
  1. Don’t overuse nasal sprays.
  1. Apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to the inside of your nose to keep it hydrated.
  1. Avoid having your heating on a high temperature in your home as it will just dry your nose.

Your nosebleed can last from a couple of seconds to ten minutes and can be either mild or severe. If you can’t stem the bleeding or it seems to be getting worse you should seek medical advice.
