As soon as you announce that you are expecting, the whole world will feel like you have become their property.

Everyone will want to rub your belly, strangers will go into detail about their disastrous labour experiences and you will be inundated with lots and lots of questions – some that can be pretty, well, annoying.

Is it a boy or a girl?

This is a classic question that you are going to be asked over and over again, and while it’s not really the question itself that is annoying you, it’s more the number of times you have to answer it!

Do you have a name picked out?

Nobody wants to unveil their chosen name for fear of someone stealing it or, worse, saying something bad about it.

Are you going back to work?

Considering you haven’t had baby yet and will be on maternity leave for awhile, thinking about work and the far off future are probably the last things on your mind.

Who’s going to mind your baby?

If you haven’t organised childcare or have no idea where to start, this question can cause unnecessary stress.

Have you been sleeping?

If you haven’t been sleeping, you are going to be feeling a little vulnerable and this question might be seen as insult... Under eye bags, anyone?

When are you going to have another one?

Seriously? You haven’t even popped this one out and people will no doubt ask what your plans are for your next.

You look like you’re about to burst! How do you feel?

Well, starting a sentence off like that will no doubt leave you feeling a little self-conscious.

Have you and your partner agreed on how you are going to parent?

You were planning on just winging it but now you’re feeling a little worried that you and your significant other haven’t sat down to talk about this...

Are you going to breastfeed?

A very personal question that can put mums on the defense no matter what they have decided to do.

Are you sure there’s a baby in there?

You might be lucky enough to have a small bump, but there’s definitely a baby in there. Definitely.

While you might be feeling a little frustrated, know that these questions are asked with good intentions so try not be too hard on them...
