Epsom salt is a crystallised form of magnesium and sulphate and is known for its ability to heal soothing muscles after a heavy session in the gym.

However, it’s not just for easing sore muscles after a workout, it is actually a pretty useful tool for easing any pregnancy-related aches and pain.

Simply pour about 300g of salt into warm water and soak in it for about 15 minutes.

Remember to ensure the water is not too hot, as high water temperatures (over 38°C) can be harmful to both you and your baby.

Here are six reasons to have a salt bath this evening:

1. It can help relieve inflammation

This can help ease any pain that you are experiencing, as well as soothe tired and achy muscles.

2. Reduce haemorrhoids

If you are suffering from haemorrhoids, Epsom salt’s anti-inflammatory properties can actually help to relieve any discomfort.

3. It can help you relax

When your body soaks up the magnesium in the salt it causes it to produce more serotonin. High levels of serotonin can help you feel relaxed and happier.

4. It helps you sleep

Not only will the increased serotonin from the magnesium make you feel relaxed, it also promotes healthy sleep so you'll enjoy a more restful night.

5. Helps with digestion

If you have been suffering from bloating during your pregnancy, the magnesium in the Epsom salt can help with the absorption of fluids in the body.

6. Soothes itchy skin

As your bump grows your skin stretches which can be quite itchy. If you are experiencing this an Epsom salt bath can relieve any discomfort.
