It takes a few weeks for you and your baby to get the hang of breastfeeding and it is important to not give bottles during this time, as it will affect the baby’s ability to learn to suckle at the breast properly. If there is a reason to give supplement feeds - either breast milk or formula, it is advisable to try to give these with a spoon or cup if possible so as to not confuse the baby with trying to learn two different types of sucking.
If you give formula while you are breastfeeding, it will adversely affect your milk production as it is based directly on your baby’s demand for food. The more your baby feeds from you, the more milk you will be able to produce. Adding formula to your feeding routine will cause your milk supply to slow down, and it will be quite difficult to increase it again. Your breast milk is perfect for your baby because it is easily digested. It is quite normal for your baby to want frequent feeds, especially in the early weeks after birth.
