How do I give my tweens a good work ethic?

A good work ethic is vital to ensure success in life. You should ensure that your tween understands this early-on as this will make the transition into adulthood much easier.Tweens of this era are commonly considered to be lazy, spoiled and generally too much to handle. But, the truth is most tweens simply need to be taught a good work ethic in order to become a well respected, energised and goal oriented person.

It’s important not to simply assume that a tween will learn these things on his own. Teaching him the important things in life, such as how to do a job well, how to be financially responsible and how to always be responsible for his own actions will serve him in future life. It’s a vital part of parenthood to motivate a child and teach him good work ethics that will take him far into adulthood.

A good work ethic starts in the home
A good place to start is to try setting up a regular chore schedule for your tween. A child aged 9 to 12 needs to learn how to:
  • Clean his room
  • Put things back in their proper place
  • Pick up his clothes off the floor
  • Do the dishes
  • Mow the lawn
Parents can instil the idea that hard work pays off by giving your child either an allowance or a privilege as a result of their hard work. If your child performs a task well, offer a reward such as a later bedtime on the weekend or a trip to the cinema with friends.

Time Management for Tweens
Learning how to manage time is a large part of instilling a good work ethic. All too frequently, a tween will leave his homework until the very last minute. This makes him feel hurried and rushed. It is vital therefore, that he learns how to manage his time by dividing his work load into small sections that allow him to feel more relaxed.

Learning effective time management now will help a tween when he is in secondary school, university and later in the working world. Using effective time management techniques at a young age will make them easier as he gets older.Setting a good example is also vital when it comes to learning a good work ethic. When parents have good work ethics, a child is far more likely to learn this effectively.
