The Health Foundation, a charity committed to bringing about better health and health care for people in the UK, have chosen a team from NHS Borders to be part of their £1.5 million programme, Innovating for Improvement.

NHS Borders will develop SAFER – a safe assessment form to evaluate antenatal risks as early as possible in pregnancy. The project aims to improve healthcare facilities in pregnancy as well as how people manage their own health by testing and developing ideas and putting them into practice.

The team which will be led by Dr Brian Magowan, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist for NHS Borders, wants even safer care for pregnant women.

Gill Lunn, Maternity Patient Safety Champion for NHS Borders, explained: “Pregnant women want to have a healthy baby and we want to make the process as safe as possible. We aim to introduce the SAFER tool with every expecting mother at their booking clinic at 8 – 10 weeks pregnant. This will help provide the safest possible outcomes for both mother and child.”

Talking to Berwickshire News about the project that will run for 15 months, Dr Magowan said: “Our aim is to promote the effectiveness and real impact of the teams’ innovations and show how they have succeeded in improving the quality of health care, with the intention of these being widely adopted across the UK health service.”
