Thousands of new research reports and studies are published every day, and while some may have very little impact on your life, this one could prove life-changing for women and babies all over the world.

New research carried out by a team of experts in London, England has given doctors the ability to detect certain placental problems in the first trimester of pregnancy.

The study, which was published in the American Journal of Pathology, shed light on the reasons as to why some placentas do not develop normally during this period. Also, perhaps most importantly, the experts were able to detect these causes even before negative effects began to show.

Given that placental problems in the first trimester can result in such serious complications as preeclampsia and even stillbirth, this research is a true breakthrough.

As part of the study, the experts measured the blood flow to the uterus and placenta of almost 10,000 subjects; all women in their first trimester of pregnancy. They then took note of differences in blood flow between the contractions and relaxations of each woman’s heartbeat (referred to as RI).

At the end of the study, the team found that those mums-to-be with the highest RI scores were almost five times more at risk of developing a placental complication than their counterparts with a ‘normal’ RI.

No doubt this research will change and possibly even save lives around the world.
