Should I be concerned about bleeding in late pregnancy?

While a bit of spotting or light bleeding is not all that uncommon during pregnancy, any kind of bleeding could a sign that something is wrong. Bleeding early in pregnancy may be the sign of a miscarriage. However, carrying your baby for eight or nine months and then noticing blood could be even more worrisome. Is it dangerous to bleed in late pregnancy?

Bleeding can happen at any point during pregnancy, but it doesn’t always mean something dreadful. Possible causes for bleeding in late pregnancy are yeast infections, some sexually transmitted diseases, or some other infection inside the cervix.

Of course, any time you are bleeding you should consult your doctor because it could be something serious such as a miscarriage or preterm labour. Miscarriage is less likely during the third trimester but is still possible. If the bleeding happens alongside cramps or contractions, this could be a sign that labour has begun early.

If you do experience bleeding in the second or third trimester, try not to panic. Stress can cause its own host of problems and add to the potential of early labour or miscarriage. Simply contact your doctor for advice, a check up, and some piece of mind.
