What are the most common medical problems I should look out for with my toddler?

Toddlers can get any number of illnesses or conditions; however, there are some common ailments that most children will experience at some point. Here is a list of the more common conditions you should be on the lookout for:

Allergies and asthma: Whether it’s a food or a pet allergy, or asthma and the typical breathing difficulties, allergies and asthma can be dangerous. If you suspect your child is allergic to something, have a test done to confirm it.

Respiratory tract infections and illnesses like croup, colds, flu and bronchitis are another group of illnesses you should be on the lookout for, particularly in the colder winter months.

Gastro intestinal illnesses, diarrhoea and constipation are a few more common ailments among young children, and because they come with a risk of dehydration, they are a major cause for concern.

Eye and ear infections, including blepharitus and others, are more illnesses you should watch out for, as they may have permanent and long lasting effects.

Skin rashes, measles, chicken pox and nappy rash are all conditions you should watch your child for too.

Last, but not least, there are the more serious illnesses – diabetes, heart conditions and chronic illnesses like hepatitis being just some of them.

The best advice, when dealing with babies and toddlers, is to take your child to the doctor as soon as possible, get a diagnosis, and begin treatment. You don’t want to take any chances with your child’s health,
