You asked

What’s the best way to treat my child’s ear infection?

Most children will recover from an ear infection, officially called acute otitis media (AOM), without taking antibiotics. Doctors recommend that you watch them carefully for a couple of days if the symptoms are not severe. However, if the symptoms are severe, you should take your child to the doctor immediately.

Many doctors are resistant to overprescribe antibiotics. Over time, the bacteria that cause AOM and other illnesses have become resistant to treatment. Experts now recommend that children with AOM only be give antibiotics when the illness will not go away on its own.

If you are prescribed antibiotics for your child’s AOM, make sure that the entire dosage is taken and follow up with the doctor about four weeks later to ensure that the underlying cause is gone.
Weather your child is given antibiotics or the ear infection is going to go away on its own, the symptoms do not start to diminish within a couple of days. If they don’t, you should get them in to see their doctor.
