Having a baby is a joyous and momentous occasion and it's hard for your excitement not to rub off on everyone you meet. But, sometimes, sadly, not everyone is excited about your impending arrival, for whatever reason, and it can be quite disconcerting for you and your partner, particularly if it's from people you'd been the most excited about telling.

And while it can understandably be difficult to do, it is important you don't let them take the joy away from you.

If you are struggling, the following five tips will hopefully help you feel better.

1. Be certain of your own feelings

Don’t let others sow the seed of doubt in your mind, so be certain of your feelings. Embrace your pregnancy and allow yourself feel excited. Once you are sure of your own feelings and comfortable in your situation, then you will be better able to ward off others’ negativity.

2. Understand why they aren’t happy

Understanding why people aren’t happy doesn’t mean you are allowing their negativity to take away from your own joy, but it will help you to see why they are acting a certain way. Most people's negative reaction is usually down to their own feelings or their own lives rather than you personally, and although it can feel like quite the opposite at times, knowing where it stems from can actually help you to see that it’s not your fault. Remember, if they are struggling with their own issues it can be hard to be happy for others.

3. Ignore them

If their negativity has no foundation then just ignore them. You don’t need people in your life bringing you down, particularly at one of the happiest moments in your life.

4. Be there for them

If their negativity is based on their own sadness or their own struggles you will need to be there for them and even considerate of their feelings. Your baby news might have stirred up emotions within them that aren’t exactly positive, but sometimes it's hard to be happy for someone else when you aren't happy. Try to be understanding and a little sensitive towards their feelings.

5. Surround yourself with positive people

Now is the time to surround yourself with positive people. Hang out with family and friends who are excited for you and enjoy this moment just as you like. Remember, you are having the baby, nobody else.
