Why am I not gaining weight during my third trimester?

Pregnant mothers need to gain a certain amount of weight during pregnancy to ensure both mum and her baby is healthy and strong. Throughout the entire 40 weeks it is recommended that mum gain between 25 and 35 pounds. You don’t want to gain too much, because it will be more difficult to lose after birth. If you are already overweight, a gain of 20 to 25 pounds is ideal. However, it is more dangerous to gain too little.

During your third trimester, it is normal to gain around 11 pounds. Of course, this is all dependent upon the mother’s weight before pregnancy. If everything has being going fine, in the third trimester you will gain between half a pound and a pound per week. This is the time period when your baby gains the most because of the development of fat and muscle your baby will use throughout their whole life. The goal is to gain steadily as you go along and not try to gain it all in the second or third trimester.

If you are concerned about gaining too much or too little weight, then speak to your doctor. It is imperative that you not diet during your pregnancy, as both you and your baby need the nutrients and energy. A healthy eating plan is a much better way to maintain your weight.
