You asked

Why doesn't poison ivy appear on the palms of my child's hands?

If your child has ever gotten into the poison ivy, you probably noticed that the rash is everywhere except on the palms of the hands. This is due to the thickness of the skin on the palms. The poison ivy rash may still be there, but the skin is tough and will not be blistered like other places on your child’s body.

Even though the palms of the hands will not show the signs of the poison ivy rash, they may still be very itchy.

As with all skin rashes, it’s best to contact your doctor if the symptoms warrant it. If you are certain that the rash is poison ivy, you can treat it at home with Epsom salt baths and calamine lotion. Just make sure to keep an eye on the rash and contact the doctor if it gets severe.
