If both you and your baby are healthy, you may already travel even if your baby is just two weeks old. There are some cases when you can fly even earlier than this, but don’t do it if it’s really not necessary.
There are several things that you should consider before deciding to travel with a newborn. When you do, first, you will be exposing your baby to various types of possible infections when you are on the plane. Take note that cold and flu can easily be transmitted, especially if you are in a closed cabin where the air is recirculated.
Second, your baby might be very unpredictable during his first few weeks. This includes irregular crying time, sleeping and feeding. Although this can easily be managed, it is a little straining for both the parents. You should know that some babies will do this for two weeks, but it can last up to three months for some.
Third, you, as the mother, should be healthy and you have to make sure that you have already recovered from the delivery. Take note that mums are often at greater risk of developing blood clots in the legs after giving birth, and sitting on the plane for a long period may only increase the risk. If you are to travel this early, make sure to support yourself by drinking lots of fluids, wearing a support hose and stretch and walk while you are on the flight.
