There’s no simple yes or no answer to this question.
If you are experiencing swollen and sensitive gums, that are tender to the touch, then they are probably being affected by normal hormonal changes, and you shouldn’t worry.
However, if your gums are bright red, are bleeding or very sore, they may be showing signs of pregnancy gingivitis. This can escalate to periodontitis, which can lead to a low birth weight baby, or other complications.
If you’re not experiencing any serious problems, stick to your dental hygiene routine – brush and floss, and take a calcium and vitamin C supplement. Visit your dentist to make sure everything is still okay, but make sure you don’t have any x-rays, and that he knows that you are pregnant.
Like all the swelling and aches and pains that accompany pregnancy, swollen and sensitive gums should disappear on their own after your baby is born. In the mean time, don’t worry about it too much, and practice good dental hygiene, and you should be fine.
