Most women who have headaches during pregnancy will find that they happen with the most frequency during the first trimester. That’s because your body is struggling to cope with the additional hormones, stress, fatigue and other things that you have to get used to.
These types of headaches usually disappear by the time you’ve reached the second trimester, and they should not reoccur during your pregnancy.
You should never take any medication – even aspirin – unless you’ve cleared it with your doctor first.
Try lying down in a darkened room. Use a cold compress on your neck, and a warm one on your forehead, or ask your partner to give you a massage. Try to eat healthily and drink enough water, as both hunger and thirst can trigger headaches.
If you suddenly begin to have very intense headaches during your third trimester, speak to your doctor immediately – it could be a sign of preeclampsia, which is a dangerous condition.
