For many mums, getting their toddler their first pair of shoes is a huge milestone, and one that their youngster usually relishes in.

For the first few days they might be proud of their new shoes, showing them off to family and friends, but they can suddenly lose their appeal when your little one realises they have to wear them every single day.

If your child has been a little reluctant to put their shoes on, the following advice will help:

1. Tell them why they need to wear them

Tell your youngster that if they don’t wear their shoes they might step on something sharp and hurt themselves. Explain how wearing shoes means they can climb trees and play in the garden.

2. Check that they are comfortable

There could be a valid reason as to why your little one won’t wear their shoes so check that they fit properly and that nothing is stuck inside them.

3. Praise them for wearing shoes

Make sure you praise your youngster for wearing them, so stick a reward chart up on the wall and every time they put on their shoes they get to a tick or a star.

4. Let them pick the shoes

Make sure your son or daughter actually likes their shoes so let them pick them out in the shop.

5. Put them in the buggy when you go out

If your youngster refuses to wear them when you go out tell him/her they will have to sit in the buggy then. When they realise what they are missing out on they’ll no doubt rush to get their shoes on their feet.

6. Don’t force them

The last thing you want to do is force your child to wear shoes – they will just fight you until you are both at logger heads with each other. They will eventually learn to love them!
