Ponds do make a lovely feature in the garden but they can be extremely dangerous in households with kids.

Any kind of water, no matter how shallow, can be a potential drowning risk, and it is important you protect your pond so that no avoidable accidents occur.

1. Invest in a mesh

When securing a wire mesh over your pond, make sure that it sits over the top of the water rather than underneath. Children can drown in just a few inches of water so it is important to be extra safe.

2. Use a grille for older families

If you don’t want to ruin the look of your pond, and have older children, you might want to consider a metal grille that sits a few inches under the water. It is important to remember that this is not a good idea if you have young kids as water will be sitting above it though, so do choose an alternative method of safety.

3. Raise it above the ground

Consider raising the pond so that it is too high for young kids to climb into it. This could be an alternative method if you fancy something a little different in your garden.

4. Put a fence around it

If you are worried about your child going anywhere near your pond, consider erecting a fence around the perimeter to keep your little one away. Make sure it is high enough that they can’t climb over it and that the gate, if there is one, is always locked.

5. Cut away all overhanging branches

Probably the last thing that mums consider when it comes to pond safety, it is important to realise that children can climb the tree and fall from the branch into the water.
