Whether they are big massive blow outs or involve reasonably mild feet-stomping, tantrums are not pleasant. And they are even worse when they take place in a public place (usually the supermarket on a Saturday morning...).

However, just because it feels like your toddler is basically airing your dirty laundry in front of the whole world, it should leave you feel vulnerable or like you need to give in to their every whim.

The next time you end up having to deal with one, keep in mind the following seven things:

1. Hold your tongue

Whatever you do DON’T yell back!

2. Use your 'Mum voice'

Hushed, pleading whispers are not going to work in this type of situation.

3. Don’t let embarrassment control you

Own the situation. Take control and handle it EXACTLY as you would at home, even if that means your quiet spot is going to be in the dressing room.

4. Ignore the haters

Haters gonna hate and all that, but don’t let that stop you from raising your voice or giving your child a good talking to. If that’s the only way they’ll listen to you then so be it.

5. Don’t let them know you are feeling out of your depth

If the stares are starting to get to you, whatever you do DON’T let your child know you are out of your depth.

6. Don’t give in to pressure

If your child is not allowed have that packet of sugar-filled sweets then don’t let them – no matter how much they scream or try to embarrass you hold your own.

7. Count to ten out loud

So that your child knows you mean business - watch the panic as you reach eight... nine...
