Toddlers are well used to their cosy cot and don’t have any desire for things to change. That's why making the move to a big bed can be a challenge on them - and on us.

But there are a few ways you can make the necessary transition that bit easier on your tot. Here are our top tips…

Stick to the old routine

The fewer changes, the easier the transition will be on your toddler. So whatever your bedtime routine is now, make sure it stays the same once you make the move.

Call it a ‘big kid’ bed

Toddlers love to feel all grown-up. Tell them that the new bed is only for big kids like them, they’ll find it much more fun and exciting.

Choose your timing wisely

Making changes is tough, so only make one at a time. If you’re potty-training your child, don’t introduce the new bed idea. Hold off. Same goes if you’re moving house or expecting a new arrival.

Opt for the same spot

It’s tough sleeping in a new bed. Don’t make your child go to bed in a whole new place as well. If possible, stick to the same room and the same part of the room, too.

Let your child pick the bed

The more involved your child feels in the move, the more fun it will be for them – and the less anxious they’ll be about it. With this in mind, let them choose the bed and duvet cover. You have the rest of the house to indulge your inner interior designer!

Make the bed cosy

Remember that your child is used to the confines of a cot, so do what you can to make it seem cosy and den-like. We’re thinking a warm blanket, fluffy pillows and lots of stuffed bears.

Make some music

Your child might be a bit uneasy for the first few days in their new bed. Calm them down with a bit of soft music. There are lots of toys out there that help kids to settle down for the night. Or why not exercise your wind pipes and sing them to sleep?

Act it out

Speaking of bears, they might come in handy if you want to act out the whole transition thing. That has proven effective for some parents. Once your child knows what’s going to happen, they’ll find the change much less scary.

Prepare for falls

Toddlers aren’t used to having no side support in bed, so it’s a good idea to invest in bed rail to prevent accidents. They probably won’t need it for more than a few months but it's worth it to put your mind at rest.
