Young children can struggle with their emotions and because of this they will experience “emotional meltdowns” from time to time.
 
As they are still learning the art of communication, it is very common for a toddler to go from being a happy and content little person to being angry, frustrated or upset.
 
However, there are ways that you can help them to deal with their emotions.
 
Watch your own reactions and mood wings.
Kids mimic the adult world so always be consistent in your own moods. If your child has a tantrum, shouting will only make their emotions intensify.
 
Always validate their feelings.
This will help your child feel understood and will calm them down. When your kiddie exhibits feelings of anger it is important that you get down to their level and explain to them what exactly it is they are feeling.
 
Give an advance warning that something is going to happen.
If it is nearly time for bed give them a five minute warning rather than just telling them times up. This will hopefully prevent any potential meltdowns.
 
If you can, give them a choice.
This will make them feel more in control. Make sure your options are something that you will agree to though.
 
Try to anticipate meltdowns.
If you see a situation escalating out of control, take them out of it before it blows up.
 
Make them feel secure.
The best thing you can do as a mum is to make sure your child feel secure. Establishing a good daily routine will mean that your little one will know what is happening and will be less likely to erupt.
 
Take some time out.
If you find that their emotional meltdown is taking its toll on you go for a walk. The last thing you want is to end up having a screaming match with a two-year-old.
 
When all is calm, give your youngster a big cuddle so that they know that you love them no matter what.
