Here are some general fire safety rules that you should be implementing in your home:
- Have at least one smoke detector on each floor of your home. Check that it’s working once a week.
- Always use a fireguard over open or electric fires and heaters, solid fuel, oil and gas stoves.
- Put out matches completely
- Keep matches and cigarette lights out of reach and sight of children
- Do not overload electric sockets and repair old or worn flexes.
- Close interior doors, so that if there is a fire, it is less likely to spread.
- Work out a family escape plan
- Teach your children what to do in the event of a fire or if they hear a smoke alarm
