Bedtime can often be the most trying time of the day for mums, with some children constantly fighting sleep throughout the night. While it can be extremely frustrating, understanding why kids act like this is the first step to a peaceful, relaxing evening.

They are not getting enough sleep.
Lack of sleep can cause tantrums, bad behaviour and hyperactivity in kids. Ensure you have a set bedtime routine and by putting them to bed 10 minutes earlier each night you will begin to notice they start to fall asleep more calmly.

They may be feeling worried about something.
Like adults, children find it hard to sleep if they have something on their minds so allow time to chat about their day and alleviate any fears or tension before bed.

Kids have a fear of missing out.
Noise from other aspects of the house can make it difficult for your little one to settle because they want to know what is going on. If you can, keep noise to a minimum or move them to the quietest bedroom.

What children are eating can affect their sleep.
What they are eating before bed can have a significant influence on getting them to sleep. Protein, chocolate, sugar and sweets can stimulate your little one while a banana, warm milk or toast can have a calming and sedative effect.

They may have pent up energy.
Make sure your child gets enough exercise during the day so they are not going to bed with any pent up energy. Get them to play a quiet game in the last hour before bed and avoid allowing them use computer games, as they can stimulate the brain.

Don’t forget, a lot of kids are afraid of the dark and unexplained noises which may be the reason why they just won’t settle. Discuss their fears with them and get a night light if necessary.
