A dad in Seattle saw his worst nightmare come true as a thief stole his car in front of his eyes with his baby daughter still inside.

The dad, who didn't want to be named, had left the car for less than a minute in order to buy something from a corner shop.

He had left the car open and running with his daughter strapped in the car seat, when, almost as soon as he entered the shop, a man walked up and started to drive off.

Witnesses say the panic-stricken dad chased the car down the street, screaming that his baby was in the car.

The police were called and 20 minutes later the car was found abandoned at the side a road, the thief having seemingly fled when he realised the child was there.

Police found the man, identified as 25-year-old Estevan L. Sanchez, in a fast food restaurant nearby, and arrested him for kidnapping and theft.

The little girl was unharmed and was reunited with her father soon after.
