While some teenagers are all about sports and being fit and healthy, there are a few who simply struggle to get up off the couch. And apart from causing obesity and other health risks, it is not good on their social life if they are not interested in doing anything active.

Here are five ways to get even the most unmotivated teenager up and moving around:

Start slowly

There is no point knocking down your teenager’s door and dragging them up and outside, you need to do things slowly and gradually. If you push them too much at the start they will struggle to keep up and might stop altogether as they find it too difficult. Small goals such as a ten minute jog or one 40 minute swim a week should at least get them up onto their feet.

Don’t punish them

The last thing you want is your teen to feel like they are being punished, so don’t ban TV time or smartphone usage - they will associate exercise with having to sacrifice something they love. Try to schedule in workouts or walks around TV shows, at least for the time being until they really get into it.

Get them involved in something they like

There is no point encouraging your teenager to get out and start running, if they don’t like it as they are likely to quit a lot quicker. Ask them what it is that they would like to try;whether it’s basketball, ballet, yoga, or swimming they will be more inclined to want to do it if they like it.

Get them involved in team sports

Team sports are not only great for your teen’s social life, but by being part of a team they will be less inclined to miss training for fear of letting others down.

Lead by example

If you are lazing about on the couch how can you expect your teen to get moving. It is important you lead the way in what you expect from your child so get up and start moving yourself.
