Mums know that when their children don’t get enough sleep they become cranky, hyperactive and have difficulty concentrating.

A good night’s sleep can also set the right foundation for a child’s development, help performance in school and prevent behavioural problems.

Establishing a good bedtime routine is one of the best things a parent can do - but it often becomes a nightly chore.

Here are five tips to help you set a good bedtime routine:
  1. Have a bedtime routine and stick to it, even during the weekend. Erratic bedtimes can lead to poor sleep habits and sleep deprivation.
  2. Give your child a 'five minute warning' so that there are no surprises when it comes to bedtime.
  3. Make sure your child’s room is dark and quiet. Avoid letting them use mobiles and gadgets that light up at night.
  4. Do not allow them into your bed and avoid lying beside them. These inconsistencies start becoming the norm in your child's mind, making it harder for them to relax if they don’t happen.
  5. Give your child choices, such as which pyjamas they would like to wear, and they will be less likely to resist going to bed.
Remember - even if they scream, kick and continuously fight your bedtime routine, stick with it and it will pay off in the end.
