Once your child has graduated from milk or formula to solid food, there is a chance that he or she will suffer from constipation at some point, just like everyone else.
Like the rest of us, constipation in toddlers is largely to do with hydration and diet. If you want to prevent your child from being constipated, you need to make sure that he or she is getting enough fluids, in the form of water, juice or another toddler safe beverage.
You will also want to make sure that they are getting enough fibre, in the form of whole grains, fruit, and vegetables. Try offering your child whole-wheat pasta instead of white or whole grain cereals. Many children also like vegetables, like broccoli, spinach or carrots, or you could try fruit. If your child is prone to constipation, avoid foods like bananas and cheese, which can cause constipation to get worse.
If your child has become mildly constipated, prune juice could solve the problem, but if you are becoming seriously concerned, a trip to the doctor, and a prescription, may be the solution to the problem.
