How should I breastfeed and pump when I am travelling?

If you are a breastfeeding or a pumping mum – or you are doing both – then you might be wondering how it is done while you are travelling with your baby or when you are not with him. Remember that when you are travelling to different places, the best way for you to store your breast milk is by placing it in a sealed container. It should also be kept in an insulated cooler with ice packs.

Mums can use pre-sterilised containers or resealable bags to store their breast milk. You may also use glass containers or hard plastics but make sure that it is clean and can be tightly sealed. You may put a small amount of milk in the container to have single servings ready for your baby. If you are going to freeze the milk, make sure to leave at least 2 or 3cm (about an inch) to allow the milk to expand.

If you place your milk in a cooler with ice packs, take note that it will only stay fresh for 24 hours. You may give it to your baby the following day or take it to your destination and place it in a fridge so that it can be stored longer. If you are not going to use your milk right away, make sure to label the container to recall its freshness.
