Bad attitudes and back chat are not just issues that parents of teenagers have to deal with, mums of toddlers also experience it from time to time.

However, what should you do if their back talk and bad manners happen more than a few times a day, and seem to be a regular occurrence?

Here are five tips to help you deal with your preschooler’s bad attitude:

1. Hold back on the angry response

There is no point responding angrily when your child says something – instead, use it as a teaching moment. For instance if your little one tells you that you’re not the boss, calmly tell them that you are and ask them again to do the task.

2. Understand their mood

Like adults, preschoolers get a little frustrated when they are tired, hungry or bored, but by understanding what they are like at certain times will help you be better prepared.

3. Don’t turn a blind eye to rudeness

If your child is deliberately rude to you, turning a blind eye is not going to make the situation go away; you need to intervene there and then, not wait for it to happen again. Remember your child, doesn’t know if they have done something wrong so, especially at a young age, don’t give them chances – correct them when they do it, it will benefit them a lot more.

4. Be realistic

Your child is still only young and trying to find their way around the world, so set realistic expectations. If you are heading out for dinner, while it is important you tell your child how to behave, expect that your youngster may get bored and present back chat or attitude. The more prepared you are, the better you’ll be able to handle the situation.

5. Talk about it after

Once everything has calmed down sit with your child and talk about what happened. It is important to use these kinds of situations as teachable moments, at this age anyway. Remember, your child is still growing and they need a guiding hand to get them through these years.
