Do multiple births always require C sections?

It is standard procedure to assume that you will need a C section for delivering multiple babies. However, if you are having twins and your babies are not too large and are turned in the right position, you may be able to convince your doctor to try a vaginal birth first. Many mothers have done this successfully when the conditions where right. However, you need to be aware that attempting a vaginal birth with twins does pose a higher risk for them.

If you are having twins and a vaginal birth is important to you, be certain to seek out a doctor experiencing with delivering twins vaginally. This will increase your odds of finding a partner to help you do everything possible to deliver naturally.

When labour begins for you, your doctor will do an ultrasound to determine infant size and position. If the conditions are favorable, a natural delivery will be attempted. Do not be surprised to be rolled into the operating room instead of a standard birthing room. Since there is a higher risk it is better to be safe than sorry. Even with the best intentions and favourable conditions, you may still need an emergency C section if things do not proceed as planned.
