Reading is a skill that comes fairly easily to some but a little bit harder to others, if your little one is the latter, there are a number of things you can do to help them build up their reading ability.

Expose your child to literature and books
One of the most effective ways to help and encourage your child to read is to expose them to plenty of reading materials. Stock the house full of books, magazines and newspapers. Don’t just stick with their age category, supply easy reads and more difficult ones – so that they can simply pick up one that grabs their interest.

Practice
It is true that practice makes perfect, so set aside 20 minutes each day where either you read to your child or they read to you. Reading aloud is important to build confidence and to hear how the words sound, but if your little one is struggling and refuses to read by themselves, having you read to them will make a huge difference in their reading ability as well.

Encourage them
Praise and encouragement are often the most important aspects when it comes to learning anything. A child will thrive when you say "well done" and their confidence in their ability to read will grow even more. With this in mind, it is important you don’t say anything negative to them or about how they read. Avoid frustrated sighs and an impatient tone.

Show them how you enjoy reading
Struggling to read can leave your child feeling deflated and not interested in learning. In fact, they might find it difficult to understand why it can be an enjoyable activity, so it is important you show them that it is. Read at every opportunity, mention funny things in the book, and discuss books that you used to love when you were a child.

Talk to the teacher
Every child develops at different stages and while one child might be well ahead of your little one when it comes to reading, it doesn’t mean there is a problem – your child is simply learning at a slower pace. Unless the teacher is concerned, you shouldn’t be - just keep persevering and practicing and eventually it will just click in their head.
