Reading is an important factor of school and daily life; instilling a love for it within your child will not only help them learn to read but it will also mean it won’t become a burden or chore.
Pick the right books
Don’t pick books that are above or below your child’s ability. Some tweens may love a good novel while others prefer something short and quick to read. The same goes for younger kids. What they read is not important it’s the fact that they are reading that should stick. The library is a great place to let your kids wander around and pick a book of their own choice.
Get into the story
This only really works for younger kids. When reading a story for your child act out what is going on and mimic the voices. If you make reading fun and exciting your child will love sitting down beside you with a good read.
Talk to them about the story
This is great way to bond with your kids, whether they are five or 15. After you have read your younger kids a chapter talk to them about what they felt or what they think might happen next. For older you can wait until they are finished and ask if they would recommend the story to you or someone else. Engaging with your child about the story means it becomes less of a solitude action.
Be patient
If your child juts can’t get into the book, don’t force it. Simply get them to pick a different one and try again. If they seem to be taking a long time to read a book, don’t question it some kids are slower readers than other kids.
Fill your home with books
Filling your home with books will mean our child will have endless choices on what to read. A book shelf in their room will encourage them to pick up a book rather than their computer. Showing them you value your books will ensure they keep their books safe.
Set an example
Show your kids how enjoyable reading is. Turn off the TV and settle down with a good book instead. Sit in the garden in the sunshine and lose yourself in a good book. Kids learn by example so tell them you love to read and talk to them about the book you are reading.
