As a parent, you probably realise that a love of reading is going to be an important factor in your child’s life. However, while it might be tempting to try to steer your child towards early reading, pushing books that are too advanced for him or her too soon, you’re actually doing your child a disservice if you do.

The secret to developing a love of books is to choose age appropriate books, and to make the experience of reading an enjoyable one.

Choose colourful, fun and toddler friendly books, which you can read together. It’s more about the bonding experience your child has with mummy and daddy than about the topic of the book at this age.

Set aside regular times that you can read to your child, and let your child sit on your lap. Have fun doing the voices for the characters, and letting your child get involved. Don’t be surprised if your child asks to read the same book over and over again. Toddlers and very young children love repetition, so this is a good sign that he or she is really enjoying your reading.

Another way to get your child interested in books, is to buy books on tape, or to take him or her to your local library’s reading hour. Even if you can’t find the time to read, your child will still enjoy the experience, and still learn to love books!
