Moving house is a stressful time for the whole family but even more so for young kids and toddlers, who don’t really understand what is going on.

To help you out and to make it that bit easier on both you and your youngster, have a read of our ten tips.

Make sure they know that they are going as well

Moving is a huge step for young kids and they can worry that they are going on their own or that they will be left behind. So make sure you reassure your little one over and over again, so that they feel more relaxed.

Visit it a few times before making the final move

Visit the house a few times before you finally say goodbye to your old one. Young kids can worry about not knowing where certain rooms are so visit it often to help them become familiar with their new bedroom and where the kitchen and bathroom are.

Involve them in the packing process

While involving your toddler in the packing process might sound like it's just going to make more work for you, your little one will feel a lot better knowing that all their prized possessions are coming with them.

Walk around the area

Have a walk around the area a few times before you move there officially. Be mindful of any parks or playgrounds nearby that you can take your little one to. This will be something that they can look forward to when they start to feel anxious on moving day.

Have their room ready before you move in

While it is not always possible to have their room ready by the time you officially move in, it will help them feel more relaxed if they are walking into something that looks familiar.

Set up their room first

If it is impossible to have it ready before the big move, try to set their room up first so that they feel secure and like they belong.

Say goodbye to the old house

Make sure you say goodbye to the old house, going in and out of each room. While this might seem a little silly to you, to your child this simple ritual can help them get closure.

Get family members to help out

Your youngster might be feeling anxious that they are leaving behind family members that live nearby, so ask them to help out with the move or visit as soon as possible.

Pack up their room last

We all know that moving home means you are often left living out of boxes for a number of weeks before and after the big day. However, it is important you try to leave your youngster’s room as it is for as long as possible.

Take your time

We know that moving is a stressful, hurried time so try to at least relieve the pressure by giving yourself lots of time to plan and pack.
