My child seems to be overly adventurous these days! What can I do?

At 16 months, most toddlers have almost mastered walking, and they’re ready to explore the world in a completely new way. That equates to grabbing just about every object within arm’s reach, attempting to carry everything from the family cat to a large box, and all kinds of other physical mischief.

While all of this is a little bit of a nightmare for parents – trying to keep that little explorer safe seems like a full time job – it is an important part of your toddler’s development.

The most important thing you can do is make sure that your home is baby proof. This is especially true in rooms like the kitchen, where burns are a risk, and the bathroom, where water poses another risk. Locks on cupboards that house dangerous chemicals like cleaning products are another must.

Once you’re sure your home is toddler safe, then it’s time to find fun ways to encourage that physical exploration. Play games that involve physical activity, sing songs and dance, or take walks in the park.
