Arts and crafts are a great way to spend an afternoon with your preschooler, especially if the weather is not particularly nice outside. As most household’s will have an endless supply of newspapers, magazines, paper plates, etc., here are some crafts to make with paper.
 
Colourful wind catcher
A beautiful way to introduce colours to your preschooler
 
You’ll need:
Various coloured crêpe paper (you can use old magazines as well), cut into strips
Crayons, various colours
1 paper plate
Stapler
1 piece of string
Scissors
 
Method:
Cut the crêpe paper widthways into long strips.
Let your little one colour in the paper plate using with the crayons.
Secure the crêpe paper onto the paper plate with the stapler.
Cut one hole into the tops of the plate using the scissors.
Thread the string through and tie to secure.
Hang it upside and let the wind blow the streamers.
 
Paper bag puppets
Once made, these puppets will encourage your little one to use their imagination.
 
You’ll need:
3 paper bags
Crayons/markers in various colours
Wool, in a number of different colours
Glue
 
Method:
Get your little one to draw a different face onto each paper bag using the crayons or markers.
Cut the wool into various lengths and glue onto the top of the paper bag – this is the hair.
Put your little one’s hand in the bag and they will have lots of fun bringing them to life.
 
Rabbit mask
You can make various animal masks and spend the day roaring and crawling around the floor.
 
You’ll need:
2 paper plates
Paint pots: brown, black and pink
Paintbrushes
Elastic string
Stapler
Scissors
 
Method:
Cut one paper plate in half – these will be the ears. Draw a smaller oval shape in the centre and get your little one to paint the oval pink. Paint the area outside the pink oval brown. Leave to dry.
In the meantime, paint eyes, spots, whiskers and a nose onto the other plate. Leave to dry.
When the face is dry, cut a hole for eyes so that your little one can see through. Cut a hole on either side to tie the string through.
Use the stapler to secure the ears to the face and thread the string through the holes.
If you like, you can use black wool to make the whiskers.
