There is no denying that preschool is a great way to introduce your little one to the school routine, encourage them to make new friends and learn lots of things. However, as September looms many mums will be either be on tender hooks at the thoughts of saying goodbye at the school gate, or impatient for the peace and quiet!

Before you pack their bag and send them off for the day, ask yourself the following questions to ensure they have a fun-filled time.

1. Can they dress themselves?

Your toddler should be able to open and close buttons and zips and be well able to dress themselves after they have used the toilet. Little things like struggling to put on a coat before playtime can dent your child’s self esteem and put them under unnecessary stress.

2. Can they manage their lunchbox?

Whether your little one is shy or outgoing they may not ask a teacher to open their lunchbox for them, so make sure they know how to do it. Get them to try it out now before school starts and get them used to the zip or flap so they feel confident doing it themselves.

3. Do they know proper self care?

While it is important your little one is properly toilet trained before going to school, they should also be aware of self care, particularly when washing their hands.

4. Have they seen the school?

Ease your little one’s fears by taking them to see the school before September so they will have an idea of what to expect, making the prospect of starting that little less daunting.

5. Do they have everything?

While they are not likely to need any forms of books or copies, do check with the school just in case – the last thing you want is for your little one to be the only one in class without a pencil or paper.
