There is nothing quite as heart-wrenching as dropping a distressed and upset child off at school. Unfortunately, the younger your child is, the harder it can be to understand why they don’t want to go, and it can be particularly upsetting if they previously enjoyed it.

While it could be something of nothing, there are a number of reasons your preschooler doesn’t want to go in.

They are feeling separation anxiety

The first term might have been fun and exciting but now, after spending quality time with you over the holidays, they might be feeling anxious because they know that school means leaving you.

They are under the weather

Your youngster might be coming down with something and simply aren’t feeling up to it. Sometimes it can take a number of days for symptoms to show, so just keep an eye on them.

They are struggling with their work

Preschool isn’t simply about your child spending three or four hours a day playing, they are also doing a lot of learning. If your youngster is struggling with their work or any tasks at hand, obviously school becomes less fun and they won’t want to attend.

They don’t get along with their teacher

Children with strong personalities can sometimes clash with their teacher and while they aren’t necessarily being bold, they might always be the one in trouble and being singled out for misbehaviour. Of course, the last thing your child will want to do is go to school if they know they will spend the majority of it sitting in the corner or being excluded from activities.

There is something going on at home

If there is something going on at home such as a relative visiting or younger siblings who don't have to go to school, your son or daughter won’t want to miss out, often seeing school as something that is interrupting their fun.

They’re shy

If your little one is shy they could be struggling to make new friends and find being in a large classroom daunting and uncomfortable.

If you are concerned about your child and their reasons for not going back to school, make an appointment with their teacher who might be able to give you a better insight into the situation and work with you to make school more fun.
