The mini-bookworms have spoken and the number one children’s book of all time is The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The classic tale has been sitting on the bookshelves in schools, libraries and children’s bedrooms for nearly 50 years.

The Eric Carle book was a favourite of ours back in the day and it is just as popular with this generation of baby bookworms.

The ChannelMum.com survey asked 2,000 parents what their kid’s favourite book was, and amongst the top ten are some tales that played a huge role in our childhoods.

Big names in the writing world including Roald Dahl and A.A Milne featured on the list, as well as J.K Rowling and Julia Donaldson.

Here are the top ten most-loved children’s books:

The Very Hungry Caterpillar
The Gruffalo
The Cat in the Hat
We’re Going on a Bear Hunt
The BFG
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Winnie-The-Pooh
Dear Zoo
The Harry Potter series
Room on the Broom

Reading is one of the greatest lessons you can teach your children. The list of benefits is never-ending. Experts believe that parents should try to make reading part of their children’s daily routine.

Reading can boost a child’s vocabulary and their language skills. As we read, we subconsciously absorb new words and phrases which can help strengthen writing skills too.

It can help strengthen the bond you share with your child. Bedtime stories and trips to your local library are a great way to spend time with your children, rather than sitting in front of the TV.

Encourage your children to pick up a book whether it's an old tattered copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar that’s been passed through the family for years or the latest Jacqueline Wilson novel.
