Top ten movies to encourage a love of reading in your child

The Witches (1990)
Movies can be a wonderful way of introducing your child to the magical world of books. This movie adaptation of Roald Dahl's gleefully horrid book is weird, wonderful and loved by children. Although,young children might find some scenes a little scary!
Snow White (1937)
Introduce your child to the magical world of fairy tales with this classic Disney movie. Snow white is the first and the most memorable animated movie from the Disney studio. It's a charming story of a princess, saved from the evil misdeeds of her wicked step-mother, the queen, by a group of seven dwarves. Your little prince or princess will want to delve more and more into fairytales after seeing this unforgettable movie. A great way of doing this is to get your hands on a copy of a collection of Grimm's Fairy Tales. 
 
The Chronicles of Narnia: The lion, the witch and the wardrobe (2005)
The Chronicles of Narnia is a series of books written by C.S. Lewis between 1950 and 1956. The film adaptation is a wonderful way of introducing children to the series. The film follows the Pevensie siblings, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy who are sent to live with Professor Kirke in the English countryside. While they explore the Professor’s house, Lucy uncovers a wardrobe that leads into Narnia, a mystical world of talking animals and magical creatures.
The Railway Children (1970)
The Railway Children is a film adaptation of the classic book written by E.S Nesbit. It's a truly wonderful movie that adults and children can enjoy together, perhaps read the book first and then watch the movie afterwards. The story follows the lives of the Waterbury children, who are forced to move with their mother to a cottage in the country after their father is taken from them. The three children, Roberta, Peter and Phyllis amuse themselves by watching the trains on the nearby railway line and begin to wave to the passengers, who they make friends with and eventually uncover the secrets of what happened to their father. 
The wizard of Oz (1939)
The Wizard of Oz has become a firm favourite with children (and adults too!) for generations. It's based on the book 'The Wonderful wizard of Oz' written by L.Frank Baum. Watch Dororthy and Toto travel the Yellow-Brick Road and make friends with the Lion, the Scarecrow and the Tin Man and then encouage your little munchkin to read the classic book. 
Charlottes Web (2006)
This charming movie is based on E.B White's classic book of the same name. It's a must read for children but if you have a reluctant book worm on your hands, why not entice her with the movie version first? Watch Wilbur and the kindly spider who tries to save him from his fate before tucking into the book! .
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)
Roald Dahl's classic book is brought to life in this 1971 movie which tells the story of a young boy who, wins a gold ticket for a once in a lifetime experience and takes his grandpa Joe with him on a tour of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. Gene Wilder plays the eccentric Willy Wonka. Ths lovable film is a wonderful way to give your child a love of reading. 
The Princess Diaries ( 2001)
The Princess DIaries starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews is a fabulously girly movie based on the book written by Meg Cabot. When fifteen year old Mia Thermopolis finds out that she is the heir to the throne of Genovia she must do her best to juggle friends, school and learning how to be a princess! Girls of all ages will love this delightful movie and will be thrilled to discover that there is a whole series of books to cherish! 
 
 
Little Women (1994)
Introduce your reluctant reader to the classics with this really very good adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's 'Little Women'.The story follows the lives of four sisters; Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March and the film is so charming that your child won't be able to wait to get stuck into the book.
Alice in Wonderland (2010)
This visually delightful movie by Tim Burton is based on the classic book 'Alices adventures in Wonderland' written by Lewis Carroll in 1865. When Alice runs away from an unwanted marriage proposal she finds herself tumbling down a rabbit hole and ends up in Wonderland, where she encounters some strange creatures like the White Rabbit and Tweedledum and Tweedledee.
