We’ve long advocated abandoning gender-specific toys – we feel that not only is gender a fluid concept, but earmarking certain toys for certain children can cause exclusion and gender identity issues.

The way we see it, leave kids be kids, and encourage them to play with whatever they want.

So we’re delighted to see that progress in this area really is marching on, and not just tangibly – practically.

The Toy Industry Association is a 100-year old trade organisation. It represents 90% of US toy businesses. as well as advocates on legislation and trade issues – so it’s fair to say it carries enormous sway.

Each year the organisation holds the Toy of the Year Awards (TOTY), but this year there will be a significant difference: unlike previous years there will be no Boy Toy of the Year or Girl Toy of the Year categories. Instead the competition will focus on the toys themselves, not on which ones suit girls and boys the best.

Because that’s not a decision for a trade organisation to make – it’s one our kids are more than able to decide for themselves.

Numerous groups and individuals have long been advocating for this change – we’re thrilled the organisation listened to them.

SHARE if you think this is a significant step in the right direction!
